(thoughts)

"Before the beautiful-no, not really before but within the beautiful-the whole person quivers. He not only 'finds' the beautiful moving; rather, he experiences himself as being moved and possessed by it."
- Hans Urs von Balthasar

"Everywhere I go, I'm asked if I think the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a best seller that could have been prevented by a good teacher."
- Flannery o'Connor

"Christians are called to leave behind, in the tomb of Jesus Christ, all that belongs to the brokenness and incompleteness of the present world. It is time, in the power of the Spirit, to take up our proper role, our fully human role, as agents, heralds, stewards of the new day that is dawning."
- NT Wright

"When we think our brother or sister has sinned against us, such an affront is not just against us but against the whole community. A community established as peaceful cannot afford to let us relish our sense of being wronged without exposing that wrong in the hopes of reconciliation."
- Stan Hauerwas

"Advertising treats all products with the reverence and the seriousness due to sacraments."
- Thomas Merton

"All the believers were of one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possesions was their own, but they shared everything that they had."
- Acts of the Apostles

"For evil men account those things alone evil which do not make men evil; neither do they blush to praise good things, and yet to remain evil among the good things they praise. It grieves them more to own a bad house than a bad life, as if it were man's greatest good to have everything good but himself."
- St. Augustine

Prayer Journals

I have been somewhat practicing an old habit of mine back in my very confused early teens: prayer journaling. I hated it then. I hated it after I quit. I need it now. I have been writing short reflections and petitions in the middle of lectures (mostly in French... I love you Mary Beth) and been holding them next to me for the rest fo the day. Right now it's my main comfort. Our God is a fair God of love and peace who hears the cries of his people, silent or spoken. This is something I have to trust in more and more each day... Does anyone here keep a formal or informal prayer journal?

My father writes down prayers and stores them in a set of olive-wood praying hands. It helps him and I've thought about doing it, myself, but I've not done it yet.

I've never really written prayers down in an actual journal form. But I often make lists of things that I've been praying for and want to continue to pray for. Partly because I have a terrible memory (I don't need to tell you that) and because for me, writing things down on paper makes them feel more real. I guess it just feels stronger than simply thinking about it in my head.

I began to keep a prayer journal back in 2003. It is a habit that fluctuates but every time I pick up one of my old Journals and read through it, I am encouraged by how God has moved in and through me during my life. I think I will start it up again.
